Great, Big World

Look around--what do you see?
Do you see what I see?
A subway full
Of people with nothing to say
People, men and women
With nothing to hold on to
Nothing to keep them from falling into a pit of shame and despair
Is this your answer?
Then look harder
Peer out the glass
What it is out there--is it what I know is there?
You see serpents, killers, and thugs
Teenagers tipsy from drugs
You see cats and dogs fighting for life
Chasing mice, chasing dreams
That is why they walk the ally way
Is this your answer?
Think again
Look at your friends
What do you see--surly something better
You see a wrench, an envious scum
You see deception, theft, and loosing
Life at it's most sits beside you
Tattered rags clothe them
While they struggle to keep their head out of water
Is this you answer?
Feel deeper
You know what I see?
Yes, I to see the subway and the people aboard
But instead of 'just' faces I see leaders and workers
The farmer, puts food on your table
The mechanic, puts heat in your home
The plumber, is the reason you bathe
And you dare judge these people
This is my answer
They are my people
The people in the ally way
I see them as well
But I do not see cats nor dogs
I see fighters, defenders, proclaimers
They go through things that put them on the concrete
Things like that would make you weep, but they shed no tears
And you dare judge these heros
This my answer
They are my heros
And your friend--yes, I have them to
But I see them differently, I see them as family
They are not of my blood, religion, or raise
But still, they are my brothers and sisters
And we treat each other as if we were twins
Never will that bond be separated
By you and your hypocrisy
This is my answer
They are my family
