Hangover Blues

Hangover Blues

Hangover Blues

The morning awakens around me
I taste the stale fumes
of my cigarettes.
The fragrance of her
is strong on my skin.

Underneath
the bilious taste
of blood red wine.
On my body
unfamiliar bruises and aches.
My memory is stuck in reverse.

Though deeply subdued
the night reveals itself to me.
Fear and anguish overtake.
Head throbbing to the rhythm
of my pounding heartbeat.

I wish the sirens musical memories
did not lead back to her.
Shame and guilt say hello again.
I know the bruises will fade
in the coming days.
and her intimate touches
will be lost in time.

But I cannot regain
the peaceful
composure of my heart
now drowning in shame.
