Sleeping Beauty

She lays down night after night,
defeated
For her biggest battle
can't be cured or treated
Time is slipping away from her hands
She's becoming a skin and bone skeleton
However, sooner rather than later
she will become nothing
but memories and sand
As the world continues
To crumble beneath her feet
She sighs, she softly cries
She is showing the pain
And the suffering
Behind her soft brown eyes
She's afraid, she's so fragile and small
She's holding on to what?
God? Grandma? Heaven themselves to call?
I told her not to be scared
I love her deeply and
I care more than I thought
But she's losing a losing battle
She has no more strength
She has no more energy
She's tired, she's exhausted,
she gave it all she could, she fought.
One more obstacle
And this can all come to a stop
But she's afraid, she's scared
She's worried, she's A Mom
She put her kids first,
Made them priorities
Put them on top
Her job is done
She can go home now
Or whenever she is ready
I'll hold my brother down
I'll keep him grounded
And strong and steady
She prays before she goes to sleep...
Now that I've started praying too..
All I can do is every night
Is sit here, ponder, and weep
For this battle she could not beat
That's alright with me
Because when it all comes
Down to that final moment
That final, long last breath
I'll tell myself and believe
That she never expired
But instead, she won
the neverending terminal war
And she chose to throw her towel in...
And retire.
Sleeping beauty is who she'll be
As she drifts off to sleep,
Forever young and peacefully.
