HEART REFLECTIONS ON THE BEACH

           Beautiful

                        Precision

You brutalize my emotions to create open wounds

Intentionally exposing my deepest struggles

Turning me inside out so that you might

Apprehend my secrets and with cold scrutiny

Bare them to your masterful manipulations

Squeezing your need for me…OUT!

You would diminish my love for you

By restructuring the truth between us…why?

As I walk on the beach strewn with shards

Of pink, green, blue and brown glass…

The moonlight sparks them with an ethereal glow.

They become reflections of my heart

Displaying my vulnerability and your angst

A bathe in the aura of circling accusations.

We’ve broken each other like this glass.

Further down I can see the lights shimmering

On the boardwalk populated with carousel laughter

And lovers dancing to the big band music

Of Duke Ellington and Tommy Dorsey…

Even so, that scene is outside of my ache.

I am solitary in this seaside revelry.

Abruptly, your “just so” smile prisms upward

From one razored glass edge and over there

A shard that holds your silent caress!

I watch it sink deep into the arid sand.

Sprawled across this brittle path are pieces

Which have emptied their images into the sea

Naked and sightless deprived of memory.

The water mirrors my face, but I see my tears

Flowing from your eyes…we are both cast aways.

Your voice swells then recedes caught in the rip tide

And left adrift in a lolling wave is my heart;

A votive offering to the rocky shoal.
