Hero Today, Gone Tomorrow Inspired by Georgina Richardson’s “Why Have You Forgotten Us?

Hero Today, Gone Tomorrow Inspired by Georgina Richardson’s “Why Have You Forgotten Us?

From the fields of war and horror, to the streets of vagrancy;

They risk their lives to protect us, so their country can be free!

They come home with many battle scars, we pin a medal on their chest;

Today they’re all our hero’s, but by tomorrow, they’ll be repressed!

For many will have lost a limb, a handicap for life;

While others suffer PTSD, and live in constant strife!

Most these soldiers are not the same, as when they left to fight our war;

Yet when they return and seek opportunity, they find only a closed door!

The years go by as they spiral down, their stipends fast deplete;

They find that they are all alone, and living on the streets!

They stand on corners and beg for alms, they won the war but lost their lives;

In loneliness they roam the world, no children nor any wives!

They fade into obscurity, forgotten and cast away;

Some erase the pain and end it all, to see not another day!

Hero Today, Gone Tomorrow, many changes need be made;

To end this wanton travesty, and more honor them be paid!

My dear Larry,

The women of ancient Sparta would tell their men, as they went to war, to return in victory or on their shields (as on a funeral bier). Either way, they were accorded the honour they deserved.

In ancient Ireland, warriors were almost as revered as kings and more famous; their battle trophies were hung in the halls of heroes and they were given the place of honour at every feasting table.

Even the soldiers returning from the Second World War were recognised for their contribution to not only their country's well-being, but that of the western world.

And yet, for some reason, after Vietnam...your country (in particular, though not exclusively) started treating its veterans like some trashy, dirty little secret best left to the scrapheap. They were used as implements...then left to rust.

But, you're right...it's time...

To end this wanton travesty, and more honor them be paid!

your friend & fan,

J ;)

My Dear Friend Jason,

Your knowledge of ancient history always astounds me.  So sad that it is not modern history too, for as you say, my country has treated it's Veterans " like some trashy, dirty little secret best left to the scrapheap. They were used as implements...then left to rust".   My take on this is that rich men get richer in war, reaping the profits of it's machine from it's casualties.  How do we amend this travesty?

Peace and Love,

My Dear Debs,

It always breaks my heart, when I see these homeless veterans, especially the ones who have lost limbs, living on the streets, begging for money.  It's a horrible travesty, for they have fought for our freedom, only to come home and be discarded.  Thank you for your beautiful insights.

Hugs, Peace and Love,

Larry my darling this piece is simply beautiful and says everything needed to be said on this horrible problem and you`ve said it much better than me. I really do hope that some serviceman somewhere actually gets the chance to read both our poems because we all want them to know that we all still care about them and want to help them in some way, by simply letting them all know that they are very important to us still and that we are still very, very proud of them all is a start at least. We all need to make sure that the polititians and leaders of our countries know that we are all disgusted that these brave men and women and their family`s are being ignored by the powers that be, the very people who are in important positions to make this situation better. We all know that there is an answer to this plight and it starts by caring about what happens to them when they come home. Those people in government should have to live on the money that our veterens have to manage on and they should have to do it for at least a full year, maybe then they would do something about this appalling situation.

Well done sweetie for a wonderful piece about a very sad state of affairs in these modern times.

Love G xx

My Dear G,

You have a great idea in trying to get our poems in the hands of Veterans.  Too bad Cosmo won't do it for us and publish it on Facebook.   The last time they did it for me, my Holocaust poem got almost four thousand views.  Would you like to try putting them on Facebook yourself?  We are not on Facebook, but we know that you are.  Maybe then we could get our points across. Again, I want to thank you for this inspiration that your powerful poem gave me.  I am surprised at myself for never having written about it before.  Last but not least, thank you so much for your beautiful words about my poem.  The only thing I take umbrage with, is that neither of us did it better, rather, we did it together.

Love you,

Larry xxx
