Gift from the Forest God

Gift from the Forest God

I love the woods.
I love to hike.
I hate litter.

I walk to the parking lot
of a Waywayanda
NJ State Park off
Clinton Road,
after my Eagle RockĀ
trail hike
and someone hasĀ
dumped garbageĀ
in the woods
next to the lot.

Why would someone
enjoy nature,
only too lazy,
too uncivil,
too unconscious
to carry theĀ
trash home?

Take only photgraphs,
leave only footprints.

A homemade sign off
a Whitehall Pennsylvania
countryĀ road says,

"LitterbugsĀ
are trash!"

I grab a plastic
bag from my auto,
pick up the garbage,
and among the garbage
is a one dollar bill.

It is gift from
the forest gods
saying,
"Go buy a drink,
but please put the
plastic receptacle in
recycling.

Thanks!"

I listen toĀ
John Denver's
Rocky Mountain High
on the drive home.
