History books

History books

War lords
epic explorers
inventions of wonder,
yet they hide
and deny
the pillage and the plunder.
Revering heroes
reviling villains
the ones you want to hear,
glossing over
an ugly chapter
of horror and of fear.
What of the Sioux?
the slain apache?
consigned to the dust,
a land coveted
in cruel supression
yet in God we trust.
What of "Great Britain"?
a glorious empire
yet take another look,
a tale of famine
a tale of murder
a crown for a crook.
What of Australia?
its earthly natives
to the margins sent,
their story silent
their songs forgotten
a land they now must rent.
What of Mexico?
and of Peru?
Inca and Aztec sorrow,
deceived and stripped
by Spanish deceit
denied of their tomorrow.
For history tells
its many stories
but who are saints and sinners?,
for the folly
in the spoils
is written by the winners.

Hi Phil,
This a brilliantly written attack on propaganda, fake news and spin. I must however defend history books. Fake news is nothing new. It has always been used to bend a populations will towards the goals of those in power. It may be a blatant lie about the presence of WMD's to justify Exon Mobile stealing oil or tales of African and Dutch atrocities to justify Cecil Rhodes stealing all of the diamonds in Africa and founding DeBeers. It is the lies and the mealy mouthed justifications that live on in the collective consciousness. It is the history books that start with questions; "Why did they lie about the weapons?" or "Did Cecil Rhodes commit the atrocities that started both Boer wars?" and then search out the evidence of what really happened. History books are the accusatory finger pointed at the lies of the past and the only problem is that only us historians read them.
Great write Phil,
Nigel.
