How Can This Be?

How can this be?
i felt alone
in the crowd that hurried past
i felt scorned
when not a soul made eye contact......
everyone living in their own world
oblivious to the pain of even one soul....
i noticed those who were tattered and torn and dirty
admidst the crowds hurrying by in the downpour..
a newspaper for a blanket on a bench...
living under an overpass..
the minutes passing like hours.
how can this be............
they make their way into abandoned buildings
when snow is piling..their winter home with vermin for companionship.
some make their way to shelters to get a meal and perhaps a shower...
others are too weak to find provision and freeze in the elements....some starve..
How can this be?
