Poem -

I Am Summer

Their view is distorted,

Twisted, as they peer through

The rising curtain of midday heat

At my familiar

Yet not altogether welcome return.

Though some pine longingly

For my planned visit

As they belt out carols of the season

While swaddled in scarfs of wool…

Others bemoan the multiple

Drops of beaded perspiration

That shake and roll

From all corners of their countenance

As they convey themselves

From one air conditioned space

To the next.

All seems worthwhile though

As families…

While enjoying crystal blue breaking waves

Or a picnic outings delights

Exclaim to one another,

“I love summer”

And I respond

In a lazy,

Straw-chewing kind of way…

“Thank you”.
