Poem -

I was only a child

I was only a child, all I needed was love,

But you never gave it to me.

I was only a child, searching to belong,

But you were too busy to see.

I was only a child, crying out to be seen,

But your blinkers hid me from view.

I was only a child, I was only a child,

But your thoughts were only of you.

I was only a teen, running around,

Searching for love anywhere.

I was only a teen, when he came one day,

And pretended to show that he cared.

I was only a teen, when innocence lost,

Thrown to the ground into the dust.

When I came to you, who I thought I could trust,

You looked into my eyes with disgust.

I was only a woman, searching to find,

A reason to stay here with mankind.

I asked you but you seemed disinclined,

To answer, to keep me from losing my mind.

Your words always bitter day after day,

Eventually pushed me far away.

Over the edge, in a dreamlike state,

I took the choice to never wake.

I remember opening my eyes, and seeing you there,

Pretending to cry, pretending to care.

You kissed my cheek, whispered in my ear,

Bitch, why have you made them bring me here.

I look in your eyes and start to grieve,

Call for the nurse and ask you to leave.

The kindly nurse ask, “Are you okay”

I say “No, but I will be one day”

I was only a child, looking for love,

I was only a child.... Mum.

Oh my God Pauline!!....... that is one of saddest poems I've ever read....... especially coming from your mom like that..........I pray that this is a fiction........ but somehow I know it's not.......... It is easily the best piece I've read of yours........ You took your reader through a lifetime of hurt........ and you did SO gracefully.......... everything about this is VERY well delivered...... the way you used repetition to maintain flow was great.......... just so heartfelt and unbelievably moving........ great writing..........ALL STARS PINNED.........thanx for being brave enough to share this............ Love to you.........T xo
