Poem -

IN THE END

In the end
We understood
In the end
We had not been good
We mourned the animals
Now long gone
Missed the trees
The sweet birdsong
So in the end
We understood
In the end
We had not been good
Had ignored all warnings
We had not paid heed
Arrogant humans
Abbhorrent greed
We watched
The broiling waters rise
Raised our heads
To indifferent skies
And in the end
It did no good
In the end
We understood
As reality awakened us
To all hope lost
We had it all
But our world it cost
And awareness dawned
Brought us to our knees
A universe indifferent
To our desperate plees
For at the end
We understood
Yes, we understood
We had not been good
