JUST A LAD

Just a lad
Fall softly now
Deaths kiss upon
Unfurrowed brow

Just a lad
Lie down alone
No more to march
Or leave for home

Just a lad
In foreign dawn
Body broken
Shattered, torn

Just a lad
Who bleeds the soil
Just ten and six
Not man, just boy

Just a lad
With hazy eyes
Who weeps for home
For mam, he cries

All pain gone
No hope of breath
He weeps for all
He leaves bereft

Just a lad
Not proud or brave
Just a lad
Who knows his name?

Just a lad
No hope to save
Unwritten story
Unmarked grave.
