Just a Tree

Not too old, but grizzled
Not too young, but etched
It still stands where it has
Stood since memory began.
Roots keep reaching deeper,
Branches spreading wide,
Leaves sprout green and shiny,
There are blossoms and fruit too.
But why?
Why, it's a tree.
It can't be any different.
It cannot not take root,
Nor can it not branch or leaf
Or blossom or fruit.
It is
Leaned on, climbed on,
Marked on, rested on,
Perched on, nested on,
Eaten on, lived on,
Swung on, lied down under,
Blown over, sunned upon,
Rained upon, grown upon,
Burrowed into, broken from,
Taken from, jumped off from,
Unheeded, flown away from.
It loves all.
Possesses none.
It's sometimes sad,
Melancholic even.
But Why?
Why care or even bother?
They say, after all,
That is what is meant of it.
It's a tree.
Just a tree.

* Wrote this when I was extremely frustrated , when I felt used, tread upon and remorselessly abandoned without any closure. In hindsight, I feel selfish for having used perhaps one of the most selfless of all living organisms as a metaphor of my cynical outburst.

Hi Sambit I like your metaphorical write
you used your analogy of a tree for your own feelings of
frustration and angst, at that time I think the tree would forgive :-)
A superb Well written poem
Best wishes Debs
Shukriya Debs for your time and generous feedback on my work.
My intention was to express how unconditional selflessness is so often taken for granted these days. And I could find no other more relatable metaphor than that of a tree.
I feel like this sometimes, underappriciated. A truly beautiful piece, I was really drawn to it!
Shukriya for your time and generous review of my work Makayela. Sincerely appreciated!
