Just another face in the crowd

Faces stood still waiting to enter the door
I moved ahead and got a little closer
Without a glance for recognition
Many joined together and stood as one
As I came into view, they all looked around--
With icy stares and cutting eyes, they spied
Animosity then surrounded my presence
And I knew I could never belong;
I was an alien,
A stray cat sniffing on the ground
so I turned and shouted out
(WHAT’S WRONG?)
I felt the rage but was confused by the reason
and how they seemed to know me very well
Although, I never recognized a single person;
Then I pondered and gave over to reason;
spat on the ground and rambled on
Life is too short and summer holds sweet promises
Why, stand in the cold, to lose my soul
just to be another face in the crowd?

I am not certain of the intention of the poet, but "Just Another Face in the Crowd" reads to me as one being taken for granted, by friends, love ones, the government, and even within the political circles and groups that one is prone to support. Nevertheless, if this was a personal experience, it appears that it brought with it a deep realization. Whatever the case may be, this poem caused me to pause and ponder.
