Last Gunshot

- Freedom is priceless, translated by Yiyan Han (c) 2020-11-25

Last Gunshot

A popular Chinese rock’n’roll by Mr CUI Jian (哔偄) in 1980's and 90's. My initial translation finished on 2015-12-17, and final modification on 2020-11-25. The subtitle is added by the translator.

When my chest was hit by a stray bullet
all the past events suddenly came to my mind
Only tears I had, but no regret

Were itĀ the last gunshot
I'd have accepted this great honour
O o! the last gunshot
O o! the last gunshot

Don't know how many
how many words haven't spoken
Don't know how many
how many pleasures haven't enjoyed
Don't know how many
how many people have experienced the same
Don't know how many
how many last gunshots
Lying down peacefully on the warm homeland
taste the morning dew, sunset ā€˜n’ floral scent
O o! only a memo left in this world

When my chest was hit by a stray bullet
all the past events suddenly came to my mind
O o! the last gunshot
O o! the last gunshot

Thank you, Jim! Mr Cui is a rock'n'roll star in China, and his song lyrics have deep meanings. So far I've translated three of his rock: Piece of Red Cloth,Ā Nothing I Have, andĀ Last Gunshot - this one. There are other goodies as well but I think these three are the best to represent his great work.

No need to be. As said in the subtitle and prologue, it's translation, obviously my version of words used ;))

Hey YIYAN!!....something to be recognized in ALL of poetry and creative endeavor is that everything has already been done to a certain degree.....and that everything created anew are things that have been created on the shoulders of those who have come before us.....so unless you're directly plagiarizing something then you CAN call it your own......great poetic interpretation here dear poet brother!!.......ALL STARS!!.....well done.....LOVE & ROCKETS!!........T xoĀ  : )

Thank you, Tony. Yes, any translation is a recreation, and obviously a goodĀ one will make the original work better but the opposite is true as well if the work is translated badly (a lot out there unfortunately). As far as the copyright is concerned, the original andĀ translation have separate copyrights - most time the author andĀ translator are in agreement in case of formal publication, not always.

When my chest was hit by a stray bullet
all the past events suddenly came to my mind
Only tears I had, but no regret

This is very much in contrast to your work that depicted a soldier who had lots of regrets ... Each serves its purpose, and your write is power one as well. Cheers.

Thanx for the kind reply brother......just remember that in reinterpreting or using another poets work you must be sure that it is in the realm of "Public Domain" first and foremost....which normally means 20 years or so......thanx again my friend!!......Peace......T xoĀ  : )

Thanks Tony, For personal entertainment, like this blog, it's okay as it's not for formal publication. I know very well the copyright issue as with all images! Think it's 50 years(?) after the author's pass-away(?). But my editors always check on this sort so no problem in this respect :))
