Poem -

last potato

The last potato had gone
Kids went hungry again
Old man too weak to work
What was left for us all
Some friends had gone to the enemy in England
Others to the end of the earth in Australia
Good news from those that went to the US
They were welcome there

Those that went took everything
Including skills such as building and engineering
Most important they took their memories
Which would stay with them forever
Their descendants are now proud
To turn rivers green on St Patrick’s Day
When everyone is Irish for the day
And American to the core
