You spend a lot on a relationship
And will not let go easily
Things can go downhill so fast
Sadly not everything will last

Forever was not meant to be
Dreaming past the present was never a possible
Imagining just you and me was inconceivable
I feared losing me

I loathed jettisoning my variable character
Having my soul eaten away
The erosion of my psyche
Us becoming we

Though now I am free of you physically
I am still tied
Unable or unwilling
To break free
My emotional claim to you wanes only occasionally
It steadfastly clings to me
Destroying my Fragility

I have no willingness to dissolve our past
To watch it fizz then eternally disappear
To become not even a passing memory
