Life After the Green Card

Life After the Green Card

My wife gets her Green Card in
August of 2017.

Bank: We go to the bank to open a savings
account for Helen.“Miss, you need an
ITIN number from the IRS to open the account.
We show up the next day with the ITIN
Number, and they tell us,  “You need a
Social Security Card to open an account.”

We go to the Social Security Office in
Morris Plains NJ with her green card,
getting there at 3:55 pm,  5 minutes
before closing time.
Helen will get her card and
S.S.number in 10 business days.

We go to the NJ Department of Motor
Vehicles (DMV) to get Helen’s
Driver’s Permit in Wayne NJ.
We bring 6 points for her identification.
Green Card.
Passport.
Divorce Certificate.
Marriage Certificate.
Copy of  Letter from the IRS.
Letter from Social Security
the number is on the way.

The woman behind the DMV desk says,
“Sorry, you have five points of ID, not six.
The Green Card is two.
The Passport is two.
The Divorce and Marriage is one.

We cannot count the letter from S.S.
The letter from the IRS is a copy and
not an original document.
Bring us a letter addressed to Helen at
your address and you have your
six points.

Two days later we go to the DMV
In Newton NJ.  The lady behind the desk
will not acceptthe letter addressed to Helen.
“You have five points. You need an S.S. card!”

“That is not what the Wayne DMV said.”
“Then go to the Wayne DMV!”

We come back a week later with the
Helen’s Social Security Card
She takes her vision test and
Drivers written test.

On her fourth written test,
she passes - you need
40 correct questions out of
50 asked on the DMV computer
in Newton NJ.

So many families
want their nannies
to drive - and
many snags and misinformation
on the path to mobility.
