Like This We Pretend

Like this we pretendĀ
That we find comfort in the cracks in our foundations.
That we find love songs in our bitter arguments.
That we like the lick of harsh words sprayed like venom from the tips of our tongues pointed in aim of the other's hearts.
Like this we pretendĀ
That the alcohol soothes the pain.
That the distance makes the heart grow fonder.
That there is no black hole, but an array of beautiful constellations in the space between our bodies when we lay in bed; worlds apart.
Like this we pretend
That a baby could save us.
That the words "I love you" have meaning.
That in our clenched fists lie butterflies which when landed kiss our skin with passion; not anger.Ā
Like this we pretend
That I want to be here.
That you don't want to do this to me.
That we want to be together.
Like this we pretend
That this is a relationship worth fighting for.
That we are happy.
That "it will never happen again"
Like this I pretendĀ
That the poems will save me.
That my words give me escape.
That one day I will become the woman I write of.
Like this you pretend
That you have not read my poems.
That my words do not haunt you.
That you are not and never will be the man I write of.Ā
Like this we pretendĀ
That we are everything we are not.Ā
Like this. We pretend.Ā
