Limekiln Lane Pit Disaster 1923

Limekiln Lane Colliery Disaster Maltby 1923
a country lane, as any other
weaves passed father boy and brother
locked beneath the crust, who's ash
can never rust..in the black air and dust
of Maltby's Mines Disaster,
Just a peacefull pretty lane..
the wheat grows in Summer--
knowing the blanket of cover
it seeds the crud ..with life , where still in
their rugged sleep the men and boys
imprisoned in the coal seam for
The Lord to keep in his heart forever..
in the bowels of this Earth spewing
dirt and contempt
young boys died, who had full lives
to live..robbed in their youth
working for a living, working in trust
that all was 'safe' their spirit crushed..
greed and blackened discontent,
your womenfolk cry a river ,
you do not grow old,
and I sit on this bench,
birds are singing...
above the poppies as I clench
my lungs with sweet air
wishing and hoping
of a better life for all miners
bless you soldiers of The Black Gold

Wonderful.
thanks....it's a beautiful spot the monument, in the middle of a lane directly above the disaster....sad though
