Little Bird

Little Bird

Little bird outside my window

from where did your song begin?

Was it from a dream?

Melodious and cheerful

your singing gently woke me.

I looked through my bedroom window

and saw you flutter away.

The sky was blue.

A slight breeze quivered the leaves on the trees.

I rubbed my eyes and pondered if I was still asleep.

Drifting up off the floor I floated out the window.

As a vapor I passed through the tree branches

and into the sky.

I swirled within a flock of starlings

over a grassy field.

Fluttering wings were all around me.

Then I shot up high into the sky

and merged with a darkened cloud.

Suspended among the droplets I became rain.

Perfectly round beads of water raced to the ground.

I became a water puddle.

A child played in me with such joy.

He jumped and splashed many times

til his mother called for him to come inside.

The sun came out and I turned into vapor again.

I floated upward into the sky

and became dew on the wings of an eagle

that landed on a high tree top.

He shuck his feathers and I landed on green pine needles.

I glistened in the sun before I disappeared into vapor again.

Up into the clouds once more I became droplets of rain.

I fell on to my roof and trickled down my chimney.

I regained my original form

and woke in my bed to hear

the little bird sing outside

my bedroom window.

Little bird , I thought, you must be magical

to have delivered such a dream

Or maybe my soul is the little bird that sings.
