Long Missing Conscience

- To all the brave hearts of conscience

Long Missing Conscience

Written in Chinese as shown in the image by Lioness in Nanking, 2018-1-16. Translated by Yiyan Han (c), 2018-01-20

Please note that the name of "WANG Quanzhang", one of the well known Chinese human rights lawyers, in the original verses has been changed to "Conscience", without the author's permission, in an attempt to make this poem of universal appeal. The title, preface, and the last verse are added by the translator.

Where're you? Conscience
We ask mountain, and it replies
In your collective hearts
We ask ocean, and it replies
In your collective memories
We ask God, and He distressingly says
In the tyranny of crackdowns

Where're you? Conscience
We again ask the mountain, and it quaveringly utters
Why don't you make the fear tremble
We again ask the ocean, and its furious wave cries
Why don't you make the violence shed tears
We again ask God, and the atomized Heaven echoes
Why don't you make the dictatorship fall in hush

O, the long missing conscience
Your warm laughter is kept in your wife's diaries
Your loving presence is engraved on the heart of your daughter's
Your braveness and fearless are in your friends' minds

The whirling mountain wind is calling
Come home! Conscience
The bursts of ocean waves are roaring
Come home! Conscience
The whizzing snow is out crying
Come home! Conscience

O, please do come home! Human consciousness
Don't ever run away from our hearts
