Mam

Thanks for coming mam, I didn't  realise when I said meet me at prinny quay
Been a long time mam, there's stuff you dont know about me.
I met a lovely girl, married her, before anyone else could.
You would be proud of me mam, things turned out really good.
Been twenty six years mam, but still seems like a week.
Shall we go for a walk mam, it's so good to speak.

Let's sit here a while, It's changed a bit I know
we are city of culture now,I think you might find it all a bit of a bore.
 You never worried what anyone thought, you were always proud
I have got those values mam. And I never follow the crowd.
I would like to introduce these kids to you mam,
these three young men are your grandsons, boys, this is your gran.

Over there mam, yeah it is the museum, now the quarter.
Yeah I know mam, fancy words but we still rely on the bloody water.
This city has changed mam. Not the run down dump you knew
everything is better now mam, Its on the up, You aint got a clue.
That big bloody white plank? That is a blade, we havent got long enough mam, lets just say here is where it is made.

Hope Dad is up there with you and that he might visit
we all miss him a lot so not much to ask is it.
We miss him every day just like we do you
all we have is a pot and some flowers to remember you two

The grand kids you knew are all grown up now,
kids of their own and you wouldn't believe how,
spread out all over the country and even the world,
there have been some dramas as their lives have unfurled
great grand kids have come and you haven't yet seen
the lives they all lead and the places they've been.

So lets wander through Hull and see the changes you have missed
no more trawlers in the docks no more waters are fished
Hessle Road was your kingdom you always were proud
To be from this famous place and you shouted it loud
That over there mam? That is the deep
where people come to visit while you are asleep

But if I have to say anything to you at this last chat
It is thank you mam, I never got the chance to say that
You taught me right you taught me wrong
you showed me what it was to grow up strong
How I wish this meeting could really take place
to say I love you mam one time face to face.
