THE MAN I WISH THAT I COULD BE

I never really knew him
In my younger days
I remember asking momma
Why he never stays
She said that since he made it home
He was better off than some
Many never get that chance
Fighting for our freedom
From that day on I remember
Seeing Dad in a different light
Praying God would keep him safe
Each and every night
Finally he came home to stay
Momma's eyes filled up with pride
I could see there was something special
That he held deep inside
Whenever he was called upon
He gave everything he had
Nothing short of a hero
I was proud to call him Dad
He was something to everyone
He was everything to me
When I look at him I see
The man I wish that I could be
Over time he tried to teach me
What it took to become a man
Respect for yourself and others
And to be all that you can
Though now the years have come and gone
He remains the same to me
When I look at him I'll always see
"The man I wish that I could be"

WOW.. Great emotional poem. Bet every father wishes he had a son that would write such a poem about him. :) Reading this, the man you are is great.
Well done. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. I wish I could be a quarter of that man.
I have read all your poems and they're excellent. Keep writing...;)
Wow Seazfar,
I am a man whom elects to sport a bold head, because i see it fitting but when i read, the pride you placed in this poem to your dad and all the admiration you contained, not only in your heart for him but in all of your well being as well, the hairs, (that i didn't quite grow yet), stood valiantly upon my head. You have a father, that (i am sure), is as proud of you, as you are of him and your words wrong clear to me and made me remember a letter my son, which was wrote to me, when i was in the army and i did not realize the heart felt love, he had for me, until i had began to read his letter, so i decided to frame it, until my return home and when i presented it to him, as he had to me, upon my arrival, he was in complete shock, that i had kept it, throughout all that time, (8) years and shed a little tear did he, once he had realized the importance, of that letter and what his true feelings as a young man, felt to me, (his dad).....So to make a long story short, this is one i think you should frame and present to him, if you haven't already, i think along with your telling him as much as you do of your care for him, this wonderful poem from you to him, because it is one, (i am sure), he would want to keep and shed a tear, over its true sincerity. To a proud father, from an inspirational and equally as proud son, such as yourself....
Sincerely,
Jim
Thank you Jim. Pride doesn't begin to describe the feeling I have for my father, It only expresses it.
