Men of War

We saw the mass devastation of incendiary
as we put pen to paper in our diaries
we were deafened by the sounds of gun shots
we cried and counted the men we had lost
day by day the soldiers I fought alongside looked younger and younger
I could not bear to go on much longer.

This was just a glimpse of what I saw
the enemy were sent to kill us by order
dark days remained and no hope for tomorrow
I often wondered who and what started all this facade
as it had continued for many a decade.

This war divided all men in more ways than one
there were times when the reasons to fight made no sense
it became a senseless act of will to just go to the forefront and die
although we had our differences we bonded together like brothers
we held our own and defended one another; as our lives depended on it
we manoeuvred and advanced pinning the enemy with their backs against the wall.

We stood victorious together
against all odds the unlikely youths of the 3rd infantry Battalion proved triumphant
liberating this land for our people from invasion
they came, they saw, but they could not conquer
the ''Men of War''.
