Merry Christmas!

We have forgotten the purpose,
Of one of the greatest miracles of known time, 
The occasion is an excuse,
For a commercial adventure and some mulled wine. 

A virgin womb,
Gave life to our Saviour,
The guiding light to lead us above,
And away from our sinful behaviour 

This Man,
Only gave and got nothing in return,
And celebrating His birth day,
Should be a time when one can give and learn.

But that doesn't happen,
And I've seen it too many times before,
We give to others,
Hoping that we'll be given back even more.

For those who do not believe,
St Nicholas is your port of call, 
But his name has been sold incorrectly,
And children nowadays expect the world, 
When all year they haven't been kind at all.

We'd rather expend all of our earnings,
In huge shopping sprees, 
We'd rather put up meaningless tinsel and stockings,
And kill off fir trees.

Where is our compassion? 
And our longing to belong to a community?
Hedonism has become a part of us all,
It has ruined our society.
