Misty
Majestically standing in the field,
Black coat shiny, bright and sleek,
Pampered and good-natured,
Recently shod to ride,
Comfortable saddle to sit upon,
Whinnied to say "come on",
Spirited you want to run,
To own and ride a horse is a blessing not a chore,
Treat them right they will be loyal to the core,
Mistreat them !!!!!!!! Beware they kick.

Hi Tracy, they are indeed beautiful animals, I couldn't ride one though, I could never put the bit in their mouths...I'm funny like that...lol...hugs ?
I used to ride in my teens , twentys and early 30s till the arthritis hit full force then had to stop x
Dies it hurt them do you think?... The bit? I think it must do...I'm passionate about animals. Sorry to hear of your ill health Tracy, stay safe ?
Can I answer this Marion? Sorry Tracy...do you mind? I will try to make it easy to understand, but "bitting" is a complicated thing.
Bits are made in all sorts of ways these days. Most are stainless steel but copper and copper mixes are also used, as is rubber and nylon and plastic. Some are smooth and some have ridges. Some have joints in them resulting in a "nut cracker" action some have double joints which lessen this action. A bit works in conjunction with the bridle exerting pressure on various parts of the horses head aswell as the mouth. Just having a bit in the mouth is not painfull if the right bit is used. The pain comes from riders hands. The mildest bit in the world can cause great pain in the wrong hands. A riders hands must be still. They can allow for movement of the horse or not allow...but they must never, ever pull. The horse must be ridden from the riders seat and legs up to the bit.
There are bit less bridles which are wrongly thought of as very mild. Again, in rough hands it causes great pain to the horse's sensitive nose area.
In Western riding (think cowboys) I have seen some pretty strong bits capable of real damage IF they were used as in English style riding. BUT they are not. The reins are always kept loose and the horse learns to move away from the rein pressure against the neck. This is called neck reining. I dont know what they do to stop the hirse though (I am not qualified to talk about Western style) but if the reins are pulled, then....ouch!
So basically, if bits are the correct size for the horses mouth and the bridle is adjusted correctly so that the bit sits in the correct place (in the horses mouth), then bits are not painfull for the horse to wear ...unless the rider makes it so by having rough hands that pull and jerk. This is why, when I teach someone to ride from scratch, I do not let them have reins until their position is secure enough in the saddle for them to have quiet hands. I always always start my riders off on the lunge line. To save the horses mouth while educating the rider.
Hope this makes sense to you, Marion.
Sorry, Tracy I could not let myself make no comment...hope I'm forgiven x
Hi Tina, thankyou so much for clarifying it all...it sounds like a really complicated subject but I'm so glad that the 'bit ' doesn't hurt in the right hands Tina, I think that might be my point though, mankind has shown itself time and time again to be horrendous to animals and I suppose I have seen so much I just don't trust them to be kind, though I appreciate there are kind people like yourself out there.
Still, you are talking to someone who stops traffic for carrier bags I think are birds and who nurses the rats the cats occasionally brings in...the bit would have to be made of memory foam for me...lol...you have comforted me that it doesn't always hurt them though...thankyou for that ?
Marion, I agree. I have seen some horrendous things. Some people should not be allowed anywhere near animals! ? ?
Dont get me started on whips and spurs lol
Kindness always wins the day ❤ x
Lol of cause. It's been so long that there are now all sorts of bits now I couldn't have answered that like you have x
Thank you for being so gracious ❤ x
I love this poem of yours Tracy, the above quote is almost spot on (it should include the words "or a woman"). But, regardless of that, it's true; there is something so very special about horses. I have been involved with them for practically my whole life. "Misty" is beautiful. Pinned because this poem is soooo true x
Misty is a friends horse and I love her to bits x
Awwww...they get you like that x
I've always loved horses mum said if she could have afforded it I would have rode from a young age. I have a field across from me with horses in so i get my dose every day xx
I know that feeling well. I used to catch rides on the rag and bone mans pony when I was younger. I bought my first horse when I was seventeen and newly qualified BHSAI x
