Monsters

When you’re young, monsters are everywhere,
Outside, under the bed, in your home.
Scary, violent, hurtful, unrelenting,
Too real, some of them.
Monsters can haunt you ceaselessly,
Day or night.
There are few safe places
In this world that worships monsters,
Their seeming power, invulnerability,
Disguised by charm, quick wits, accomplishments
That are deemed worthy by
A strangled society.
Society is becoming a monster,
Pulling at us to do it’s bidding,
Whether for good or evil,
We are expected to be puppets,
Sheep, no right to criticize or question,
Just follow along.
Some do speak their truth,
Against the monsters, and die for it.
They are courageous and offer hope.
Perhaps we can exorcise our monsters,
Personal and societal,
By listening, observing life around us, educating ourselves, standing up.
Saying our truths, and listening to other truths,
Having a discussion involving our minds and hearts,
Using critical thinking, learning from life experience,
Citing facts, which are hard to come by these days.
Opinions are interesting, but not valid reasons for
Violence, poverty, poor schools, pollution, hating cultural difference.
At the base of every monster is fear.
Today fear is loud and clamoring for attention.
We all could use some faith,
Not necessarily Christian in nature.
Betrayals happen every day,
And leave bodies and souls in their path.

Nice piece Susan I like this it's so powerful and well structured and holds great meaning when I was younger I was always afraid that things were beyond our knowledge and beyond what our eyes could see and that our parents or leaders were not completely telling us everything that there indeed was a monster or there is such things as ghosts and goblins now that I'm older I only believe in one of those things but neither the less great write and thank you for sharing I always love to read your writes
Thank you Dameon for your encouraging words! I was also skeptical about what I was taught in school, and fortunately I had professors for parents, who encouraged me to read more about subjects. Even the libraries I went to as a youngster were limited in their selections, but I am a life long observer and learner. I have gone to a few different colleges, never got a degree, because I never did the "required" classes, I went for my interests. I am a passionate lover of life, and have hope that our world can change by "exorcising" the monsters. The government here in the USA is so corrupt, and money/control motivated, it makes me sick. Sorry to go on, just wanted to say thank you for reading and commenting, your comments do encourage me to continue in my voice, and not be concerned if my subject is controversial! xoxo Susan
