MORNING PATROL

MORNING PATROL

The streets are dustyĀ
eyes still crusty
from lack of sleepĀ
but still
we must complete our feat Ā
A mournful dawn breeze creates mini tornadoesĀ
on we plough
through small dust clouds
as my squad and i head into a nearby townĀ

I frown,
nĀ
wipe my browĀ

Even though the wind blowsĀ
the sun is already up and is blaring downĀ
its intense heat penetrates my kit
making me perspireĀ
My skin feels as though it’s on fire

Got to keep my head thoughĀ
eyes on a swivelĀ
even though my visions blaredĀ
from this constant drizzleĀ
that rolls off my browĀ
and seems to sizzleĀ

This intense heatĀ
Beep, beep beep

What’s that over there?Ā
We stop and stareĀ

KABOOM!Ā
I’m on my back

I wake seconds later
my ears ring like a thousand church bells
ringing in tandem.
I could just make out a flickering orange light
through my eyelidsĀ
I try to open my eyesĀ

I did say try
More like pryĀ

They are stuck togetherĀ
I wonder why i lay on the groundĀ
then realise why,Ā
My heart starts to poundĀ
Slowly I pry my blood soaked eye lids openĀ
a concoction of blood and sweat drizzles downĀ
from a cut on my foreheadĀ

I feel cold, frozen
But not chosen

I look to my left,
my best friend lies deadĀ
his uniform charred black
minus both legs
Two bloody stumps pump a crimson river
that carves its way through the dusty sand
creating its own mosaic picture by his hand

Art in the sandĀ
I cuss

Realising my predicament
i open my mouth to screamĀ
however nothing leaves
just a wisp of airĀ
saliva drips onto my chest Ā
pittering my bullet proof vest

For a secondĀ
I’m a baby

I lay gathering my thoughts
Even though I couldn’t walkĀ
Or talk Ā
The intense heat from the still burning car
It scorched my face
It’s going to leave a scar

BATTLE SCARS
girls love them Ā

The thick black smoke bellowing into the morning breezeĀ
marrs my vision
it was like a black vale had been thrown over the town Ā
obscures my visionĀ
I now have a new mission Ā Ā

I heard the voicesĀ
two or three different onesĀ
speaking in a language i didn’t understand
their heavy boots Ā tapped against the cobbled road Ā
kicked up the dusty sand Ā
TAP, TAP, TAP,Ā
Almost hand in handĀ

I hit the groundĀ

I heard the sound of an ak 47 being reloadedĀ
that sound was unmistakableĀ
my spiritĀ
unbreakableĀ
I knew that the enemy was upon meĀ
and the reason i was on the ground
was from a car bomb explodingĀ
That was the loud bangĀ
I remember it,
only briefly though
Now my memoriesĀ
Once more flow

One minute we were laughing and joking the nextĀ
a blinding flashĀ
followed quickly by a loud bang,
the devil himself had sangĀ
It was like being hit Ā in the chest by a wrecking ball
the shock wave knocked me off my feetĀ
catapulted me across the streetĀ

The voices continue to chatterĀ
their boots continue to tap
they're to my left

I’m dead for sure Ā

I go for my rifle,
i reach outĀ
i wanted to scream realising i was minus my right arm
it lay discoloured and crimson stained a few feet from me,Ā

I wanted to scream

However that wouldn’t have been constructive nor productiveĀ
it was surreal looking at my hand still holding the stock of my rifleĀ
for now i had to stem the blood oozing from the bloody stumpĀ
that used to be my armĀ
that was my main focusĀ

staying alive!

With a shaky hand i quickly pull the belt fromĀ
the loops in my pantsĀ
and apply a tourniquet to my armĀ
it hurt, I’m not going to pretend it didn’tĀ
I wince through gritted teeth as i pull it tight and lock it into place
the blood flow slowly eases Ā Ā
I’m relievedĀ
believe me

I refocus on the voicesĀ
they sound close
their boots no longer tap danced on the cobblesĀ

CRAP!Ā

I knew they were crouched
That meant they had either seen or heard me
Or were just being cautious Ā

UnfortunateĀ

My left hand un-clips my side arm Ā Ā
click!
i release the safetyĀ
I take aimĀ
I’m a righty not a leftyĀ
the gun feels quite heftyĀ
normally it would have been a two handed grip
my hand shakes profusely
The butt starts to slip Ā

The voices soften to a whisperĀ
there almost on top of meĀ

Somebody help meĀ

I feel nauseousĀ
think I’m going into shock
my vision blaresĀ
i feel woozy
time for a snoozy Ā Ā

My eye lids rapidly flickerĀ
like a camera shutterĀ
the faint outline of a dusty bootĀ
passes my peripheral visionĀ
suddenly it gets bigger

whack!Ā

A bright light flashes behind my eyesĀ
followed swiftly by an Ā agonising pain to my left cheek
my head rockets back against the wall
more pain follows, it doesn’t stall Ā
my head feels as though it had been squeezed in a vice
At least twice
It’s not nice

bang! bang! bang!

Three shots echo through the airĀ
something wet splashes across my Ā cheek
and settles in my hairĀ
friendly voices replace foreignĀ
my eyes close
I slump to the ground Ā
i must have passed outĀ
i wake back at base Ā
to a nurses smiling face

Am I in heaven? Ā

my eyes wellĀ
I’m a soldier first
with feelingsĀ
but still human
at my core
Ā
Ā
Tears fall in abundanceĀ
I’m thankful to be alive
thankful I still have my eyesĀ
with which to see my pretty wifeĀ

I’m gratefulĀ

Yes I’m Ā minus a hand and arm
but still I have my looksĀ
My charmĀ
a heartbeat
still beats in my chest Ā
my friend on the other handĀ
not so lucky the blast took both his legs Ā
i was grateful to be alive
Ā

Lost
