Poem -

To My Little Sister

To my little sister

With your glittering blue eyes full of laughter

And your worn cowboy boots,

I hope you enjoy this time as a kid.

Sometimes I wonder how you can be so immature

But then I remember that,

Unlike me,

You have the opportunity to be immature.

When I was your age, I was

Taking birth control pills and being checked for cancer,

Picking up the pieces of our mother’s broken heart,

Waking up to her empty bed at four a.m.,

Calling her and asking her where she was,

Sobbing into my pillow over our father’s betrayal,

Spending Tuesday nights at the laundromat with him,

Spending Friday nights at dinner with him,

And picking up the pieces of my own broken heart.

When I was your age,

I wasn’t immature

I was a little adult.

So, little sister,

With your bright smile

And your joyous laugh,

Enjoy this time

Because you’re going to miss it when it’s gone.
