My Son

My Son

                My Son

Couldn't wait when your mommy told me
I'd have a little buddy soon
Did my best to make you comfy
Sure hope you like the color blue

I have waited for this day
Like so many dads before
My prayers have been answered
My little lion you will roar

There are a couple rules
It's early yes I know
But please don't take them lightly
Someday they'll help you grow

See your daddy made decisions
That often set him back
This list that I am giving
Will keep you right on track

No matter what your doing
Always give your best
Around here we say "yes mam"
And "Thanks to God" before we rest

You may not get in a car
With a driver who's been drinking
You my son are smarter than that
Not a clue what I was thinking

Son you need to hit the books
Study hard when you're in school
Don't worry if kids call you names
Being smart will make you cool

There will never be a time
I will say that it's ok
To pick on another person
Black, white, straight or gay

You may not make fun of others
No matter what they do
You can be any type of person
But a bullies just not you

Your daddy's had his share
Been picked on most my life
From four-eyes, to fat, to fighting for you
It's like a never ending knife

But since I know you're smarter than me
I know you'll handle it much better
I'm going to do my best to teach you
So you're equipped for life's bad weather

Many times it feels impossible
But always rise above
The hate and anger many feel
Show them how to love

There are a couple others
Look both ways before you cross
Grandma told me this for years
I'm sure glad she was the boss

And don't eat yellow snow
Just as important some would say
You were born and raised in Buffalo son
It will melt sometime in May

Always know your limit
Break the rules but not the laws
Give your life a purpose
And you will cover any flaws

Friends will come and go
Hold close a chosen few
The ones that you can count on
Build yourself a crew

Girls will help or hurt
You will see that soon enough
Find a good kind hearted woman
Rough times will be less tough

She will grow you inside out
She will care about your heart
She will laugh at all your stupid jokes
She will be faithful when apart

I'm spending quite some time on this
Biggest decision of your life
That isn't just some girl out there
That's your future wife

Daddy made this mistake a million times
Save yourself the pain
Find your perfect woman
Make your last names the same

Son love your family more than me
They are the wisdom of our past
Great grandpa taught your dad so much
Help make that knowledge last

There are some things in life my son
I really just couldn't do
But I've done my best, followed my heart
And that's all I will ever ask of you

Forgiveness is often very hard
Please learn to just let go
Shake it off and just move on
That will help my boy to grow

I haven't mentioned God so much
Truth is I'm not sure what to write
He has been your fathers greatest gift
Defended me with all his might

Your passion and your heart
Let them light your way
Hard work will always, always help
But son don't forget to pray

Great grandpa gave me something
Someday I'll pass on to you
Two old and muddy bibles
Carried everyday in World War Two

You see they are my prized possession
From sacrifices that were made
For you and I to live in freedom
God Bless the USA

Son be the greatest giver
Shelter homeless feed the poor
Give up your last dollar
God will give you back a thousand more

Someday we'll do as others
The fathers of the past
We'll grab a chair and crack a beer
Those times will go by fast

And so I know someday you'll ask
What happened to mommy and me
I will try to keep it simple son
We just disagree

But I will fight for you until the end of time
Look over your shoulder and there I'll be
Pushing, pulling even carrying you son
Cuz that's the daddy that's in me

You are my one true love
You have given my life meaning
I would give you my last breath
That's not sad just how I'm feeling

Son always know I love you
Just give your best my only plea
The more you give, the better life works
And the happier you will be

I've done my best to live by this
Which I pray that you do too
And if you need the proof of that
Well son, my greatest proof is you
