Necessary Narcissism 

I love you, me. 
I just want you to know that. 
Listen, I really mean it. 
It’s just us right now no need to be embarrassed. 
No matter what happens 
I always got your back. 
I’ve been meaning to tell you that 
for a while now but I’ve been busy 
trying to figure you out. 
And only recently rustled the courage 
to say it to your face. 

Let’s be honest you’ve made mistakes. 
But I forgive you. 
For all of them. 
In fact, you changed my perspective, and now 
I thank you for all the trials and tribulations
Because I learned something valuable from each. 
Lessons professors could never teach. 

I know you are a good person at heart,
But you don’t always know how to show it.
There isn’t always an answer. 
I know you are smart, and you try to act with your head, 
But sometimes you need to heed rationale
And trust in the process instead
Sometimes the answer is right in front of us.

I also wanted to tell you that 
I'm proud of you 
Remember all the praise we got at work the other day? 
In school when we were younger? 
All those friends we’ve made? 
The ones that text or call you on your birthday, 
even though it’s also the holidays?

You have a creative spirit; you should lean into that.

I know its been a tough year 
Just like I know that we’ll bounce back
You lost your best friend 
A new beginning’s end 
Another new one can commence 
I know you tried to fill that void 
And I know you know now that we can’t 
But you have more time and love to give now. 
That's reason enough to smile. 
And those are more contagious than Covid.

One day maybe someone will love you as much as you loved her
But maybe not 
And that's cool too
Regardless you’ll have me

If another creative spirit does come into your life
And they love you,
And they match you, 
Because they want to, 
You know exactly what to do.
