Poem -

Neon?

Neon?

Normal?..whatโ€™s normal?
Bombardedย  with diversity,
Racism, sexual orientation,
Disability..
See stuff and recognise it
Easy!
Really?
Take a 12 year old shopping
He turns from angel to demon
In a heartbeat.
Sanctimonious โ€˜tut tutsโ€™ and icy stares
โ€˜Blame the parentsโ€™ โ€˜not enough disciplineโ€™
Heard it all..Iโ€™m bored
Open your eyes and open your minds
Autism comes without neon signs!

Hi Lodigiana, great poem. Morrisons supermarkets now do quiet Thursdays soย  people with autism can shop in relative peace. I suppose that the invisible differences are harder to comprehend but being judgemental of a child you do not know when he/she throws a tantrum is closed minded and stupid. Another really great write.

Hi Nigel, yes you areย  correct about Morrisons and that'sย  certainly a step in the right direction! ..having autism in the family certainly make one review how we react to situations that we have no real understanding of and making blind judgments..Thanks so much for your comments - always so good to receive them. xx

Wow, what a great awareness write, Lodigiana ?? Thank you for sharing this incredible piece. I have worked in the Education sector with autistic students & also worked in the Welfare to Work sector to help support & assist individuals with autism & other disabilities. I gained so much personally from these individuals on a daily basis & also very much hear the frustration families/cares feel about the lack of awareness. Youโ€™ve highlighted this brilliantly ????? x

Thanks so much for your really informative comments- it is a frustrating situation to experience but maybe little by little people are becoming more aware of Autism and will become less quick to judge. Really appreciate your input, thank you so much Tracey!
