Poem -

Night

The sun fades into the background of the sky at its deepest blue hour… never black.

You can no longer see past the fog that caresses your windows and poisons your air.

The tears start racing down your cheek and you panic as they blind you while you try to watch them hit the ground.

Your heart pounds at a million different paces, but you cannot grasp your chest

because you’re on all fours trying to keep steady.

It’s like one thousand needles being thrown in your direction, your feet still crazy

glued to the soft, white carpet. Your memories seem to last forever.

It’s like one hundred eyes watching your every move, when the stars come out and

fear overtakes your dreams. Every day the sun leaves and you are left with a

nightmare.

The smoke carries up the souls of the innocent that block your path like road kill

in a prison yard.

You are a hostage to another man’s soul. Your lungs become filled with the remains

of the ones you love as you inhale their rotten scent and exhale their last

wishes.

Your personality becomes manipulated by the words spoken around you. The ones you

can barely make out through their tight lips. You no longer feel a reason to

live.

Babies looking up into the face of death before their eyes see their first sunset.

Children of all ages cling to the fabric of their mothers, being yanked by every limb to

detach them.

Gunshots fly by the hundreds. Kill by the thousands. As many as a tree full of sparrows,

each one released as fast as a blink.

The bread crumbles between your fingers and the crumbs that fall slowly to the

floor could save another man’s life.

You’re running. You’re running so fast and you’re told not to stop, even when it

hurts. Sometimes you don’t know why you’re running or who you’re running from. But

you run.

The angel of death is your closest friend, but yet, you’re worst enemy.

It’s like being told you have 10 days and you die.

You count down from 9.

And when you reach two days you realize,

You only have one chance… to live.
