November Rose
The seasons shift
18th November.ย
The month past half way done.ย
Morning coffee in the garden.ย
Sleeves rolled, sitting in glorious sidelight sun.ย
Feeling warm.ย
The leaves just finally turning.ย
The birds in defiant song.ย
And,ย
by the wall,ย
that single rose.ย
Delicate, beautiful and strong.ย
I try to enjoy the coffee.ย
Old bones warming in the sun.ย
Sitting by that lovely rose.ย
Thinking.ย
Oh god what have we done.ย

Wow!! NIGEL!!.....what a stunning thought......made even more powerful asย the backdrop to a pleasant morning where you sit warming your bones in the sun of your garden......must have ruined that cup of coffee......PINNED!!.....miss you around here dear poet brother!!.......Beautifully penned!!.......LOVE & ROCKETS!!.....T xoย : )
Hi Tony,ย
It was a really beautiful morning and I have to say I did enjoy my breakfast. The sun was beautiful.
However it just became impossible in the warm sun to ignore what has happened to the climate in my own living memory. Especially here in the northern hemisphere. In Britain we have the comfort blanket of the gulf stream keeping us temperate but the seasons were still predictable. You didn't sunbathe in the middle of November.ย
The permafrost in Canada and Alaska and Greenland are failing and where winter ice should forming it's still late. This is not just a shift in the seasons though. While the ice is forming later it is also early to thaw.ย
We measure geological times in named periods and we are now living in the Homoascene. We have screwed up so badly the scars are marked in the planet itself.ย
Still, the bacon sandwich was nice.ย
Sorry for the rant mateย

Hello Nigel,ย
I loved how you captured this moment, absorbing the morning as you contemplate natures shift, before you start the day. Very tranquil in your wording. A beautiful readย

Thanks Gwen,ย
It's a gentle write about a very deep fear. It was a beautiful morning but it is November and in the northern hemisphere that's totally out of kilter with how the season should be. Enjoying the moment felt like an accusation.ย
I am glad you enjoyedย

Dear Nigel....oh how this piece has set me thinking...the beauty described in the simplicity of what we have surrounding us ..and yet the realisation that we have cause so much hurt to our wonderful planet...the joy tempered by the ย sadness is palpable..beautifully ย written my old friend...Lodigiana xx
Thank you so much Lady L.
I really felt this one as I wrote it.
However you try to look at it we are not meant to be sunbathing in Novemberย
It's an upside down world Nigel. Check out the book "The Manic Sun" by Nigel Calder and keep an eye on www.solarham.net Our Sun has far more to do with climate change than we could ever have imagined. Hope you're keeping well. DD X
The dark thing is that, at least till yesterday, it was still in bloom. It is not meant to be a perennial rose.ย
Stay safe DDย
Nigelย
such an enjoyable read, Missed your work most of all
Thanks Lisa, I'll try to post moreย
