Poem -

The Ocean's Escape

I walked alone on the beach, drifting aimlessly.
Hunger gnawing in my stomach, and my throat parched with thirst.
My hope of finding civilization was gone, lost with the last rays of sun.The ocean lapped at my feet, welcoming me into its watery depths.

Perhaps it was purposely taunting me, offering water I could not drink.
Maybe it was teasing me, making fun of my situation.
It could be that it was offering me a situation, a way to leave this torment.
Or possibly it was telling me to let go, to leave this life I live.

I took a few steps into the ocean, the waves seemingly getting bigger.
The ocean encouraged me further, pushing me to take more steps.
I followed the ocean’s lead, and the water now reached my chest.
And as I took one more step, the water closed over my head.

As the waves got bigger, I realized my mistake.
I thrashed around, trying to break through the surface.
The moon was above me, filled with promises that could never happen.
The salt water burned my eyes, and with resignation I finally closed them.

I swam now with more urgency, my lungs burning for clean air.
I came to terms at how dumb I was, running away from my troubles.
I didn't want to give up, but I knew it was too late.
My body slowly stilled, I felt trapped inside my own body.

And as I lost my conscious, I heard the waves laughing at my helpless body.
Laughing, at my stupidity.
Laughing, at how I had tried to take the easy way out.
Laughing, at how I had chosen to take the ocean's escape.
