OCTOBER

It's already been a month now

Since October last came home

Everybody's friend, the girl next door

Is the tragedy of this poem

A quiet town looks up the road

Silently waiting on her return

Even those who never really knew her

Will wait, dreading what's to learn

Her mother will never be the same

Her father gone years before

Sentenced to toss and turn all night

A family listens for the door

The secrets of the night

Are so often never told

They are mysteries never solved

A galaxy filled with holes

We can wish upon every star

And still sit in the dark

We can offer every apology in the world

But they can't heal a heart

It's unsettling when you realize

Things hit so close to home

No one really ever feels safe

Minds will continue to roam

The most fearful part of this story

Is the way we grab onto hope

And it's gone in a second

When we realize someone out there knows

Where are you October?

The month has come and gone

Do you lie somewhere on this earth?

Or somewhere else beyond.
