THE ODD COUPLE

THE ODD COUPLE

The Hedgehog and the Hare
Were different and unique
Hedgehog had a spiky back
The Hare was soft and sleek

Both of them were best of friends
Differences they didn’t see
They were happy to be together
Enjoyed each others company!

But the creatures in the Forest
Were surprised at Hare’s strange choice
Hare was popular in the woods
But the Hedgehog had no voice

They thought of him as quite aloof
‘Prickly’ and quite ‘slow’
Hare was ‘mad’ and ‘bounding’
But respect for him they’d show

But the day their friendship happened
Was the day he helped Hare out
Of a sticky situation
Where Hedgehog held more clout

The woodland snake was quite a fiend
He’d sidle through the grass
Watching with his beady eye
For any prey to pass

So when the Hare came scurrying up
In the undergrowth so thick
He didn’t see the movement
Of this evil swirling stick

But the Hedgehog had been sitting
Underneath a bushy hedge
He saw the snake now slithering
And his body he did wedge

In the path of the mad Hare
As he came steaming in
The snake he pounced at both of them
Hedgehog pierced his leathery skin!

The snake recoiled with pain
And squirmed off into the distance
“Oh Hedgehog, you were so brave
You saved me in this instance”

“Well hare you know I ain’t as bad
As all the creatures say
I can’t help the way I look you know!”
And he hung his head in dismay

The Hare he realised what they’d done
And too felt great disgust
To judge someone on looks alone
Really wasn’t just

I promise Hedgehog from now on
You’ll always be my friend
I was a fool in judging you
This is where my foolishness ends

So the Hedgehog and the Hare
Went on their merry way
Laughing; joking; having fun
And still are great friends to this day

Cheers Jai, glad you enjoyed.  Love writing adult stuff but found a liking for writing for a younger audience too!  Wrote one called 'Seasons Change' about a butterfly and an ant a few poems ago which also had a moral to its story!!  Thanks for reading Jai :)

Thanks Susan, just trying a few different things at the minute, too much in a comfort zone and wanted to challenge myself a bit.  Doesn't always work but this one was for the kids; and god knows I have enough of them LOL!! :)
