Ode to Prickly Things

To all things prickly these praises I sing
From bees to cacti and porcupines too
They garner respect with pokes and with stings
I find I admire their sharp pointed view
They're born with these tools, it's not by their choice
Instinct demands they protect what's inside
Only when threatened they give fear a voice
Armed to defend when there's no place to hide
Though stinging to them has become an art
Even a hedgehog can soften it's quills
For the core is tender and full of heart
When it senses we come in peace and good will
Teaching a lesson on wearing kid gloves
They garner respect with pokes and with stings
Most hearts respond to the language of love
To all things prickly these praises I sing

Jenny I was once stung by a bee,
your poem is sweet to me
though the years bring pain
Your words are not in vain!
I love this poem Jenny!
It holds so much learning
smiles from Jai :)
Jai, thank you for sharing your personal experience and your rhyming comment..clever! I think people who strike out with their claws extended are really just in a lot of pain like a wounded animal or wary of trusting from past experience.
Thanks for letting me know you like this!

I love this! Glad to find something so innocent and fun!
Random Enigma, thank you so much for letting me know you like this! innocence is a elusive thing these days, but when I look at your profile picture with the sleeping babe, there couldn't be a more perfect word picture association! Thanks for supporting my work with your kind comments!
