The Oldest Friend

You were never far away.

 I’d consult with you when           

 no one else would listen.

Somehow, you’d have the

 right words – even if I

 couldn’t really hear them.

  Your name would change often.

  You could be male or female –

   depending on the occasion –

   depending on my mood.

   Although you could never be seen,

   you were always there being my

   friend when no one else would.

  You’re my oldest friend and

   I’m glad I know you.
