On Hurtful Words
Quite sour, the words that fall in jest
And drops upon those with no contest
So sour are those which born of hate
Do flower from that tree passed down
Where love and violence, a breeding ground
Coexist, and dare, to procreate
-----------------------------------------------
But stronger still, with wrath and screams
Forcing the meek to rebel in dreams
A 'temporary fix' deep inside
Festers a dormant retaliation
A steely shell repelling conflagration
Causing hibernating violence to come alive
-----------------------------------------------
In its finality, before the gale
Actions form with thoughts to impale
In its ugliness bring ideas which kill
With a sudden outburst, out comes a knife
The rage unchecked, she stabs him twice
Such are the efforts of a broken will
----------------------------------------------
A regimen of screams, often unheard
A foundation built, on hurtful words....

This is a prime example of what poetry can do.
The subtly building crescendo to that moment of (provoked) violence is so deftly handled, and with such skill, that it seems inevitable in retrospect.
But this is no mere tale of abuse and retribution.
The truly striking aspect of this poem lies in the form...specifically, the rhyme-scheme. The way you plant the rounding-off rhyme in the middle of each stanza [aaBccB] creates a moment of anticipatory tension, before the deeply satisfying completion of the verse.
And therein lies the brilliance; with a form which demonstrates the beautiful and pleasing effect words can be put to; in the subject matter, you highlight a way in which words can be put to truly ugly and destructive use...and the tragedy that can sometimes lead to.
Subtle, complex and extremely finely crafted. This is an accomplished piece of work.

My Dear Brother Poet Tony,
She suffered Slings and Arrows
Till one day she had rebel
There was but only one way
To exit from her Hell

Soon after she found her freedom
