ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS

ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS

The Gothic tower stood in frosted twighlight
Tall Tall above
The whitened scene below
The people crunching footsteps
Shedding echos
In the Christmas snow

And they were calm of spirit
Peaceful
Glad of heart and kind
Excited and merry in the twinkling lights
That shone greetings to the coming night

A tree stood proud in glory
Dressed fine in splendours robes
Tinselled up
And baubeled

Upholding all traditions
Old

And snowflakes fell
As snowflakes do
With grace, in thickened flurry
And humanity stilled its grateful breath
Did not rush
Or hurry

As from the belly of that oldest stone
Heaven sang its aching song
Haunting notes which soared in flight
Out into that holiest night
In praise
In joy
In love divine
At midnight
On a Christmas time.
