‘Once upon a time’

I read you ‘Once upon a time’ before you shut your sleepy eyes
I hushed your “Mammy I don’t want to sleep”
I stopped your tiresome cries

We travelled to Fairyland 
We played in Neverland
You flew out of your window
Peter Pan held your tiny hand

A golden ship sailed the stormy sea
We saw pirates & Captain Hook
Peter Pan, Wendy & Tinkerbell
They all appeared from out your book

Oh how you loved your bedtime stories
Magic filled your sleepy head
Your little face was full of wonderment
When I turned the pages as I read

Then I’d tuck you in your bed
I’d kiss your cheek & say “Goodnight”
But you were always fast asleep in dreamland as I switched off your bedroom light
