OUR BOLOGNA HAD A FIRST NAME

Inspired by Bill MacEachern

OUR BOLOGNA HAD A FIRST NAME

There's a generation that doesn't have the largest population which probably was for the best...

Many call it a forgotten generation...

They didn't have X Box but, the things they could do with a cardboard box kept them entertained for days or until they needed a new box...

Kids were remote controls when the parents didn't want to get up to change the channel on the television...

There were no cell phones so if you spent your change at the five and dime store, or the arcade and you wanted a ride home...

There were pay phones...

Your parents would get mad at you if you called collect and said your name...

You wereΒ just to say your location...

Later the police got mad at you if you didn't use your name and they had your location....

Kids were made to play outside and don't come home until the street lights came on...

Netflix was a bunch of VCR movies lined up in a row...

If you rented from the video store and didn't rewind you had to pay a fine...

The first time I heard someone burned a CD...

I thought they set it on fire until it was explained...

We were never even thanked...

It was our idea first...

We didn't have computers...

We had a Radio, A Tape Recorder, and we would press play and record and made mixed tapes and we gave them to our friends for them to listen to and we get some in return...

Sony caught on and started charging a fee to download music...

Halloween we were handed a pillowcase and sent down the road to knock on doors and take candy from strangers...

Cars didn't have seatbelts...

We didn't know a helmet wasn't just for motorcycles...

I don't care is a common response to just about anything...

It's not disrespect or being rude, we just don't care...

It's a carefree attitude and they love to have fun...

Some kids were a middle child, some were the youngest of the family and summer began on the last day of school and ended on the first day of school in the fall.

The next Generation has a screen to read over a bowl of cereal...

We read the Cereal Box...

You could have a knife in your room, just don't smoke weed in the kitchen...

Gen X at the age of 10 you were 30 when you turn 50 you're 30....

If you could make it, you could eat it...

We didn't have lactose free, gluten free...

We had Peanut butter and Jelly in the same jar...

We were good climbers and learned to balance on chairs...

If you fell and were unconscious you were there until your Mom came home and told you to walk it off...

Some had children and they're treated like they're made out of glass...

I'm surprised they're not being made to wear bubble wrap because, they sure have gotten soft...

We didn't have mental illness because, there just wasn't medication available...

We had to figure it all out on our own...

Loved this trip down memory lane and I completely agree with the overindulged, ridiculous parenting of today...I'm at a loss...there will be few future poets, musicians, writers artists or philosohers from such upbringings because children have no.idea how to be alone with their own heads and imaginations. Their thoughts are blocked by constant bombardment. I sadly, do not agree with the mental health bit, I believe and know that people can and do break down completely and that mental illness is real and invasive. I also believe we had a much more personalised and caring service years ago and also the correct facilities...today its more of a DIY service which fails every time. Great write Sparrowsong. x

Hello Marion...

Being a Gen X turn key kid you dealt with things on you own...

Would a kid with mental illness be able to take care of themselves?

Of course, there was mental illness...

If there wasn't we wouldn't have had Psychiatrists or Mental Hospitals...

We were a generation of survivors...

We didn't have a microwave oven until I was a teenager...

I couldn't reach the cabinets or the stove but, when you're tired of sandwhiches, cereal and toast, you better learn real quick how to cook and not get burned...

I had 2 choices being Home alone or having a babysitter that just came to be paid and eat my food...

I became my own Lawyer at 8 years old...

My parents didn't have extra money and the babysitter would be paid and for what?

She wasn't teaching me anything, she wouldn't play games with me...

She took over the television and ate my food and hogged my telephone...

Not acceptable to me...

I'm thankful I had a choice and I couldn't have been more glad than to be a part of the forgotten generation...

I'm glad we had to use our imagination which made us naturally creative...

People turn to Gen X a lot more than people think because, they know how to survive when the systems crash...

We didn't have Gluten Free, Sugar Free, Fat Free options...

We thought Helmets were only for motorcycles...

We didn't have seatbelts...

Most of us are still alive and not filling our bodies with medications that leads to more medications...

We're strong, resilient, intelligent...

We got around on things that didn't require oil or gas and we could go as far as we wanted, depending on our sources would determine how fast we could go...

Thank you for your kind comment and support...
