Poem -

Prison of Our Hearts

The darkness of muted gray walls
the place where prisoners lie
The engine of hope now stalls
this land where dreams die

Many stronger men, much stronger than me
have given up on life itself
Growing fearful of being free
succumbing to weaknesses of mind and health

I understand that as we grow older
with anxiety of the unknown
Our hearts dim and become colder
the despair of dying alone

Often it is too much for us
who lost the courage of younger days
Who no longer are as quick to trust
so within these walls our spirit stays

The prison is no longer defined by bars
but by the boundaries of our heart
We just need to look upon the stars
and have the desire to just start

No foreign venture is easy at first
sometimes it never is
But God alone can quench your thirst
comfort and strength He freely gives
