Racism via Conquistadors

Racism via Conquistadors

ENCOMIENDA SYSTEM
The pyramid of society by
     class and
           ethnicity
     helped stoke racism
when the Spanish
“conquered” the
New World.

Glory, Gold, God,
 but Girls
could be added
with the rape
that came along.

     ENCOMIENDA SYSTEM PYRAMID FROM SPAIN
     PENINSULARES:  Spanish born in Spain
CREOLES:  Peninsulares kids born in New World
MESTIZOS: Spanish & Nat. American parent kids
MULATTOS:  Spanish and Slave parent children
NATIVE PEOPLE:  Native Indians in the Americas
     AFRICAN SLAVES:  African slaves
           White
           White
                 Whitish-Tan
                 Brownish-Tan
                      Red
                      Black

Insidious in creating a ethnicities where skin color
shows your place the economic and political realm,

whites having power and privilege,
with the Native Peoples and Africans
working as slaves
with no rights.

The lighter your skin,
the brighter your
prestige, power
and pocket book
in the New World.

And I use to wonder
why my Domican students
compared their skin
color to each other all
the time.
