The Rage of John Bull
Since his eyes fell upon her for the very first time
John Bull was in love with Miss Sweet Caroline
She was comely and wealthy with breeding so fine
He swore he would have her and bided his time
While she brushed away suitors she treated him kind
‘One day I will have you to be mine for all time’
He said at the junction to Miss Sweet Caroline
‘John Bull you’re good hearted; a true friend of mine’
I’ve been promised to a man but to you I’ll be kind
‘What promise is given to one not yet seen?’
John Bull she then scolded and perceived to be mean.
With a word never spoken she saw him as past
Till the warmth of her lover did caress her at last
Her man met John Bull with contempt in his stare
John Bull took his life and burned his body somewhere
She waited for her lover till sunset turned to gray
Ashen was her longing heart so filled up with dismay
John Bull ran to the hills with a rage still black as coal
Until they found him in a cave half dead from the cold
In the spring Miss Sweet Caroline blossomed in glee
Taken by the arms of love by a new man from the city
John Bull eat his last meal, for the ‘hangman’ was his day
Still raging with a fire that only death could take away
