Reality

Reality

I like to think I'm a butterfly,
ethereal and slightly shy.
In truth I'm a moth drawn to the flame,
despite being burned time and again.
I like to think I'm a velveteen mink,
cunning and wily I stealthily slink.
In truth I'm a ferret stuck down a hole,
crawling through tunnels in search of my goal.
I like to think I'm a nightingale,
accomplished perfection on every scale.
In truth I'm a crow cawing out notes,
leaving me open to everyone's jokes.
I like to think I'm a lioness proud,
showing my strength through my roar fierce and loud.
In truth I'm a tabby, lazy and fat,
no motivation to do 'this' or 'that'.
I like to think I'm a cuddly lamb,
doing my best to help where I can.
In truth I'm a wolf lying in wait,
quick to interpret indifference as hate.
I like to think I can simply be me,
living my days unconditionally free.
In truth I'm a martyr bearing the blame,
paying the price for life's endless game.

Thanks so much for your lovely comments my friends, Cherie and Dblank. This was one of those writes where I had the first line but no clue where it was going to take me. When I read back through it, I noticed the deepening level of emotion and recognised what I was writing. It was a very quick, fun write and I'm glad it raised emotions in you both.xo
