River Dance

Swiftly runs the river, between the water weed.
In the open water, speckled trout begin to feed.
On the myriad swarm of mayfly, hatching far too late.
As they fall back upon the eddies, too tired to even mate.
Then the day clouds over, and everything grows still.
There's no life upon the river only a sound of water rill.
But clouds they pass right over, and sunlight breaks from cover.
And back the river springs to life, as dragon flies do hover.
Wings all shimmering in the sunshine, all of a different hue.
Many are the colors, all of the rainbow too.
Their eyes are missing nothing, as they fly fast over mead.
And darting over river, before settling down on reed.
Then laying eggs on rushes, waiting nymphs to appear.
Surviving through the winter, for the following year.
When the winter's over, they climb the freshly stem.
To break the sunlit surface, on this the Norfolk fen.
Many are the species, of this carnivorous beast.
Flitting from morning cover, and on the gnat they feast.
They dart about in sunshine, a beautiful sight to see.
As we lay out upon this meadow, and also watch the bumblebee.
