Poem -

Robin

Robin

intrepid little warrior
stoutly dressed
the guise of spring
blazoned on his chest

who heeds the blight
of winters sting
content to trade
his serenade
until the sun can sing

Beautiful, beautiful gem of a poem Gwen, as colourful and full of character as the Robin itself. I absolutely adore Robins, such cheery companions for the bleak chill of Winter as well as singing messengers of rebirth and Spring.
I know I will savour every line and each verse whenever I encounter our happy red breasted friends.  A joy to read, thank you!  xx

I must comment on your artwork too, how much talent can Cosmofunnel and a Sunday evening take! :)  Amazing artwork, brilliant! xx

Tony :) It is always such a treat to find your comment on my work. So glad you enjoyed this one my friend. I also adore Robins. I think they are amazing little winter warriors. When you think how many birds migrate as the cold sets in. Yet this little feathered friend sticks it out and sings its heart out for us all. I have one visit my garden daily. I quite often catch them taking a bath

So glad you liked my little scribble too :)

I hope the year has been kind so far to you xx

you are on a wonderful journey as an artist and poet, we are blessed to have a place here to watch, read and listen as you weave it ....

this one ill have to memorize and recite some time for friends while we share stories and a bottle of scotch .... they will assume it's by a great poet I've encountered in my reads, they will be so very right.

Oooh...well, you can certainly use them properly! What make are they?

Hi Tina they are by Castle Arts. They are their 120 premium adult artist pencils. They are oil pencils. They have a nice selection of shades and come with a swatch sheet that is numbered so you can make a directory of each gradient for each colour as a reference. Very handy :)

They sound lovely. I used to love Caran Dache (sp?)  pencils...but my art was no where near as good as your's so they were okay for me. Your art work is just brilliant!

Aah yes I think I have had their water colour pencils before. I have seen your horses and they are fabulous, so stunning. I loved seeing how well textured their coats were in your paintings. You are a fine artist :)

have you ever looked at the books by James Gurney ? I would recommend them to any artist who is interested in realism and improving understanding colour and light. Not that you need to improve I have seen your work. But we artists are always pushing ourselves :)

Book 1:  Color and Light A Guide for the Realist Painter James Gurney

Book 2: Imaginative Realism
how to paint what doesn’t exist. By James Gurney

Helped me improve my awareness not just for painting but art in general. I am still trying to improve. Practice makes better they say. You should share more of your art as it’s wonderful to see :)

Wow again, for the poem and doubly so for the drawing, that's never a 'sketch' - this robin is alive, ready to fight the robins in our garden ❤️

Gosh John you spoil me my friend. It really is a sketch on some printing paper I might add as I didn’t have a sketch pad at the time. Always been told to work with what’s at hand

really pleased you enjoyed both :)

all the very best to you and yours ❤️

Well, to me as an artist's son and husband, one who can not even draw a flower, the difference between a sketch and a drawing is that a sketch is quickly done to get an idea of the subject. If thjis really is a sketch (and yes, I take your word for it), then I am really curious as to what a real drawing in yopur opnion looks like. Way to go!

Hi John, thanks for the comment,  this bird isn’t very big. It took me less than twenty mins to draw the bird itself. On a piece of A4 paper. I wanted to test my new pencils I got as a gift at Christmas. (Castle oil pencils) I am into realism art of late. I do a lot of timing practice sketches. You give yourself a time limit to see how detailed you can go with one element. This case a Robin. I suggest you search “realism sketches” or even “concept art sketches” as there are some phenomenal pieces out there. And look up speed drawing exercises. It is a great way to enhance your drawing technique, because it teaches you not to overthink things. The key to the Robin is the layers in colours. Colour itself is illusive to the eye. What we perceive to be a single colour or shade can actually be many other colours making that colour. For instance a red squirrel has no red in it. Green grass can actually be layers of blue. Thanks for the comments on this piece. I can waffle for ever on such things. Art runs through my family too. All the best xx

Hi, Gwen, thank you. I will see if I find the (Robin's) courage to steal some of my wife's pencils and make time to draw sth again (it's been like twenty years or so...). Eline is also always pressuring me to take up some drawing... To be continued. Keep safe and drawing both with words and pencils

Would love to see you pick up some pencils John. If you haven’t seen Kim Jung-gi I would definitely look him up. Sadly he died last year suddenly. But he was famous for drawing on a huge canvas in front of an audience, his talent for perspective and not using any reference was incredible. Very inspiring Artist. Take care of yourself :)
